Nuno Magalhães da Silva Cardoso, former president of the Porto City Council, died this Monday at the age of 64. The former mayor was admitted to Hospital de Santo António in Porto, where he died following a prolonged illness. The information was confirmed by sources close to the former mayor.
Born in Peso da Régua on October 31, 1961, Nuno Cardoso was an engineer and entered politics in 1990 as an aide to then-president Fernando Gomes. He later became vice-president of the municipality and assumed the presidency in October 1999, when Fernando Gomes left office to join the Government, remaining at the head of the municipality until 2002. During that period, he was involved in the preparation of Porto 2001, European Capital of Culture, and the planning of the Porto Metro network.
After leaving the presidency, Nuno Cardoso remained connected to public life and ran again for Porto City Council in 2013 as an independent, in an election won by Rui Moreira. In 2025, he ran again for the Porto Primeiro movement, with housing and mobility among the main priorities. Alongside his political activity, he was an invited assistant professor at FEUP and chaired Águas do Douro e Paiva.
Nuno Cardoso's body was taken this Monday to the Lapa Church, where it will lie in state. On Tuesday, a Mass will be celebrated at 2 PM, after which the funeral will proceed to Peso da Régua. The current mayor of Porto, Pedro Duarte, and Rui Moreira, who defeated him in the 2013 election, have both expressed their condolences for the death of the former mayor.
