Kremlin says "not ruling out" resumption of negotiations with Kyiv and Washington

Jornal Económico7 September 2026 at 15:39

The Kremlin stated on Monday, September 7, that it "does not exclude" the resumption of trilateral negotiations between Moscow, Kyiv and Washington to find a solution for the war in Ukraine. The spokesperson for the Russian presidency, Dmitri Peskov, declared that it is still too early to discuss specific locations and dates, but argued that any attempt constitutes a step toward peace and thanked the American negotiators.

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner traveled to Moscow on Saturday to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and on Sunday proceeded to Kyiv, where they met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The envoys of US President Donald Trump presented both heads of state with new "more effective" proposals to end the war in Ukraine, started by the Russian invasion in February 2022, although the details of these proposals were not specified.

The mediation efforts undertaken by the United States since Trump's return to the White House in January 2025 resulted in several rounds of negotiations between Russians and Ukrainians throughout 2025, but without concrete results. The process has been stalled since the beginning of the war in the Middle East, on February 28 of this year, with the parties remaining divided mainly on the issue of Ukraine's cession of the territories whose annexation Russia claims.

Zelensky stated on Sunday that he fears the conflict may drag on through the winter, a critical period during which the country faces the risk of suffering a new wave of devastating Russian attacks on its energy sector.

The judge in the case refused to declare the statute of limitations on corruption and money laundering crimes related to the Vale do Lobo case, rejecting the defense request from Vara, Rui Horta e Costa, and Diogo Gaspar Ferreira. The magistrate argued that accepting the limitation period would create an inadmissible "procedural fragmentation," thus keeping the crimes in question active in the proceedings.
