Bernie Ecclestone, former chief executive of Formula 1, was arrested this Monday, September 7, at Tires Aerodrome, in Portugal. The 94-year-old businessman was arrested while transporting a firearm of the shotgun type.
Portuguese authorities carried out the arrest at the aerodrome located in Tires. No further details were revealed about the exact circumstances of the arrest or about the destination Ecclestone intended to go to with the weapon.
Bernie Ecclestone was for decades the central and dominant figure in the organization and management of Formula 1, having served as CEO and administrator of the competition for more than 40 years, until his departure in 2017.
Ecclestone's arrest comes at a time when the former Formula 1 magnate lives divided between the United Kingdom and Brazil, the home country of his wife.
