The Algarve and Baixo Alentejo regions are served by a single hematologist doctor. This specialist is responsible for providing services at the hospitals of Portimão and Beja, being the only professional available to treat all hematological patients in these two regions.
The situation was reported by the Medical Union, which classifies the reality as critical. According to the union, the existence of only one hematologist for two regions demonstrates the serious failures in the organization of health services in these areas of the country.
The union points the finger at the Government, considering it responsible for the situation. The lack of specialist doctors in these regions reflects, according to this entity, a human resources policy that does not meet the needs of the population.
