Tomar approves two-euro tourist tax and estimates raising 300 thousand euros per year

The Municipal Chamber of Tomar approved this Monday, unanimously, the final version of the tourist tax regulation of two euros per overnight stay, estimating to raise around 300 thousand euros per year. The mayor, Tiago Carrão (PSD/CDS-PP), stated that Tomar recorded in 2025 about 171 thousand overnight stays, with the municipality expecting approximately 20 thousand to be covered by the different exemptions provided for in the regulation.

The regulation provides for charging two euros per person and per overnight stay, throughout the year, up to a maximum of five consecutive nights. Among the exemptions provided for is the one destined for pilgrims. The minimum age for application of the tax was changed from 12 to 13 years, after contributions received during the public consultation.

The revenues will be used for the maintenance and enhancement of public space, tourist promotion of the municipality and support for cultural activity. The mayor justified that tourism causes greater wear and tear on the territory and public space, so the revenue should be applied in these areas.

The regulation now goes to voting at the next Municipal Assembly and, subsequently, to publication in the Official Gazette. The municipality is also consulting the market to identify the electronic platform that will enable the operationalization of the tax collection from tourism operators. The PS voted in favor, although maintaining doubts about the municipality's capacity to ensure effective collection of the funds.

The judge in the case refused to declare the statute of limitations on corruption and money laundering crimes related to the Vale do Lobo case, rejecting the defense request from Vara, Rui Horta e Costa, and Diogo Gaspar Ferreira. The magistrate argued that accepting the limitation period would create an inadmissible "procedural fragmentation," thus keeping the crimes in question active in the proceedings.
