The Mayor of Guimarães, Ricardo Araújo, participated in the celebrations of the 750th anniversary of Kaiserslautern, the German twin city of Guimarães, reinforcing the relations between the two municipalities. During his speech, the mayor highlighted the fundamental role that relations between cities play in creating new opportunities for cooperation and exchange between peoples.
Ricardo Araújo emphasized that relations between cities truly make sense when they bring people together, allow them to learn about other experiences, and give rise to ideas, projects, and opportunities that otherwise might never be found. The mayor also presented Guimarães as a territory with a strong historical identity, but equally committed to the future.
Guimarães was presented as this year's European Green Capital, a city where heritage and history coexist with a strong university, industrial, cultural, technological, and sustainable dimension. Ricardo Araújo described Guimarães as an ancient city, but with new ideas, very proud of its history, but building its future.
The preparation of the celebrations for the 900th anniversary of the Battle of São Mamede, which will take place in 2028, also received particular emphasis in the presentation of Guimarães during these festivities in Kaiserslautern.
