A former investigator was detained in Belgium on suspicion of espionage on behalf of China. Belgian authorities suspect that this former investigator diverted sensitive technology to Beijing, in a case involving alleged industrial espionage practices.
The investigation focuses on the company BELGAN, which is insolvent. The technology in question is gallium nitride chips, considered strategic and with high-value military and civilian applications.
According to the investigation, the chip technology was diverted to a competitor based in China. This case comes in the context of multiple ongoing investigations in Europe into alleged Chinese espionage, with several countries expressing concern about attempts to steal intellectual property.
