The Lagos Highway (RJ-124), known as Via Lagos, presents a risk of "sudden pavement collapse," according to a diagnosis by CCR itself, the concessionaire that manages the road. The company sent a letter in July to the Department of Roads and Highways (DER-RJ) warning about the situation. The concessionaire states it does not have authorization to carry out the interventions considered urgent on the road's drainage system.
The impasse over the works occurs because four years ago the State Court of Auditors (TCE-RJ) ruled illegal the additive terms that extended the concession until 2047. According to the office of Counselor Rodrigo do Nascimento, rapporteur of the case, these terms "reflected on the toll tariff value," questioning the legality of the contract renewal.
Via Lagos is one of the most expensive toll roads in the country, connecting the Metropolitan and Lagos regions of Rio de Janeiro. The highway spans 57 kilometers, running from Rio Bonito to São Pedro da Aldeia. The CCR concessionaire identified seven points on the road that would require immediate interventions to avoid collapse.
