On September 3, 1976, the so-called "Azores Tragedy" occurred, one of the most serious aviation accidents in Portugal's history. The incident took place on Terceira island, in the Azores archipelago.

The accident involved a C-130 plane from the Venezuelan Air Force, which was carrying 68 people on board. All of those people lost their lives in the disaster.
