Works are underway for the reconstruction and expansion of the former kindergarten in Airas, in São João de Ver, Santa Maria da Feira, which will become the new Living Better Space. The community facility is located in Largo das Airas, an emblematic space in the parish that was upgraded under the Living Neighborhood project, and is situated next to the Basic School of Souto Redondo.
The new space was designed to welcome different generations, with particular attention to the senior population. The mayor of Santa Maria da Feira, Amadeu Albergaria, highlighted that the proximity to the school makes it possible to create conditions to bring generations together and develop activities together, intending to provide seniors with more opportunities to remain active and participate in community life.
The building will have two multipurpose rooms, an activity room, a reception space, sanitary facilities and an outdoor area equipped with a barbecue. The intervention involves the reconstruction and expansion of the former building with a contemporary architectural solution integrated into the surroundings, representing a municipal investment of approximately 529 thousand euros and an execution period of approximately eight months.
The Living Better Space will continue to house the headquarters of the Association Better Living – Sport, Culture and Leisure, which will promote activities such as physical exercise and wellness classes for seniors, digital and cultural literacy promotion actions, and intergenerational animation initiatives, aiming to encourage active participation of the older population and prevent situations of isolation and loneliness.
