Mértola Town Hall inaugurates new school centre

Correio Alentejo7 September 2026 at 01:00

The Municipality of Mértola inaugurated on Monday, the 7th, the new School Centre of Mértola, an investment valued at over 2.5 million euros that marks the start of the 2026-2027 school year in the municipality. The new space, located next to the main school of the local School Grouping, represents, according to mayor Mário Tomé (PS), "a determinant investment for the future of the territory".

The school centre has capacity to accommodate more than 150 children in pre-school and 1st cycle of basic education, with eight activity rooms, a kitchenette, multi-activity rooms, a library, laboratory and several outdoor play areas. Mário Tomé highlighted that the new space allows for the implementation of an "integrated teaching model", bringing together from pre-school to 12th grade in a single physical space, with shared access to the sports gymnasium, municipal swimming pools and canteen.

The mayor recalled that the municipality has been making "for several years now" significant investments in educational centres in five localities across the county, and that what was precisely missing in Mértola was an adequate space, since pre-school and 1st cycle were operating "in very old buildings, no longer meeting current demanding requirements".

The municipality highlights that the proximity of the new school centre allows for an integrated educational pathway up to secondary and vocational education, contributing to the improvement of the educational experience through adequate and modern facilities, as well as to greater efficiency in the management of human and logistical resources.

Electoral Court says Nikolas did not call Vorcaro 'lindão' and determines that report be taken off air

The Regional Electoral Court of Minas Gerais (TRE-MG) determined that the ICL Notícias portal remove content that stated that federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL) called banker Daniel Vorcaro, from Master, 'lindão'. Judge Jair Francisco dos Santos granted a 24-hour deadline for compliance, after listening to the report's audio and concluding there is no moment when Nikolas uses this term. The decision partially grants a right of reply request from the candidate for re-election, and ICL repudiated the determination, classifying it as 'censorship'.

Opinion: Geraldo Pestana | Libretto and Staging

This opinion article by Geraldo Pestana analyzes the so-called "cork law" and its relationship with press freedom, noting that the secular nature of this legislation has epic contexts, citing the phrase "with the new press law we cannot say what we think". The author considers the anachronism of the issue lies in the media, in foresight and in a certain justice in the recovery of the concept of property-owning democracy, warning about the tension between media legislation and freedom of expression.
