Born in 1992 and still going strong: Regalenga, a 34-year history in Montemor-o-Novo

Regalenga, an establishment located in Montemor-o-Novo, celebrates 34 years of existence in 2026, having opened its doors in 1992. Over more than three decades, it has become a reference in local dining and in community life. José Piteira, owner of Regalenga Bar, spoke about the journey of the space in an interview with Rádio Campanário, highlighting the changes, challenges, and adaptability that marked the establishment's history.

The story began as a bar and quickly gained scale, even becoming the market leader across all of Alentejo. However, the Covid-19 pandemic forced a change of direction, with successive lockdowns and restrictions imposed on the restaurant sector leading Regalenga to reinvent itself. The space transformed into a restaurant and began a new phase, which ultimately proved to be positive.

Over the years, Regalenga built a close relationship with the community, participating in local initiatives for more than 25 years. For José Piteira, this participation goes beyond immediate returns, allowing the establishment to showcase local dining, reach new customers, and gain regulars who then return to the main venue.

From bar to restaurant, Regalenga has navigated different eras and managed to adapt to changes without losing the identity built since 1992. At 34 years of existence, José Piteira maintains an optimistic vision for the future and the determination to continue making Regalenga a reference establishment in Montemor-o-Novo.
