According to the specialized website The Kitchn, there are several visible signs that allow you to assess banana quality before purchasing. Nutritionist Jemma O'Hanlon explains that dark spots or bruised areas on the peel may indicate damage to the flesh and faster deterioration of the fruit, resulting in an excessively soft texture and less pleasant flavor.
The appearance of the peel is one of the most important indicators. Bananas with vibrant and uniform color have usually ripened properly, while grayish, dull or irregular tones may suggest that the fruit was exposed to temperatures that were too low during storage, compromising the texture and altering the flavor. The end of the bunch also deserves attention: a green, firm stem free of cracks indicates that the fruits will continue to ripen gradually, while a dry, darkened or cracked end suggests an advanced ripening process.
Not all spots are negative. Small brown dots scattered across the peel are generally a positive sign that the banana has reached an ideal level of ripeness for consumption. However, extensive spots accompanied by soft texture or altered odor may indicate internal degradation, so it is advisable to check the firmness of the fruit before buying it.
For those who do not intend to consume the bananas immediately, opting for slightly green fruits is more advantageous. At this stage, bananas contain more resistant fiber, associated with satiety and good intestinal function, in addition to having a lower glycemic index and allowing better control over the ripening pace at home.
