"Livestock farming is now looked at differently": quality gains weight in the business - Gonçalo Patrício at Expomor

Gonçalo Souto Patricio, breeder and selector of the Limousine breed, was present at EXPOMOR 2026, integrated in the historic Feira da Luz in Montemor-o-Novo, considered by him to be the largest livestock fair in Portugal. The breeder participates regularly in the event, explaining that the work for the fair begins long before its opening, throughout the year.

In this year's edition, Gonçalo Souto Patricio presented only one specimen, chosen for its characteristics and potential within the Limousine breed. The animal stands out for not causing calving problems, providing good weaning weights, and being rustic—characteristics increasingly valued in livestock production.

When asked about the current moment in the sector, the breeder considered that livestock farming is being looked at differently, highlighting that the context where price was privileged over quality has given way to greater attention to the characteristics of animals and the value they can add to farms.

Participation in EXPOMOR translates, according to Gonçalo Souto Patricio, into concrete returns for breeders, with animals well sold and a good network of contacts established. The 2026 edition features the Mertolenga breed in the spotlight as "Breed of the Year" and brings together different protagonists of the rural world in Montemor-o-Novo.
