Extreme weather phenomenon causes material damage in Albergaria and Oliveira de Azeméis

Diário de Viseu6 September 2026 at 14:15

An extreme weather phenomenon hit the municipalities of Albergaria-a-Velha and Oliveira de Azeméis, causing significant material damage in both localities. The storm was characterized by a combination of factors that made the event particularly intense and destructive.

The main cause of the damage was the fall of a large amount of water in a very short period of time. This intense precipitation was accompanied by strong winds and hail, which aggravated the effects of the storm in the affected areas.

The ice balls that fell during the storm had considerable dimensions, reaching between two to three centimeters in diameter. This large-sized hail contributed to the material damage recorded in the homes and infrastructure of the two cities.

Heavy rainfall ahead: anticyclone may lose influence and give way to intense rain on these dates

In mainland Portugal, sun and heat should predominate until around September 15, with only light rain possible in the North and along the coast. A significant weather change may occur between September 17 and 20, when the anticyclone may lose influence and allow the approach of atmospheric disturbances, potentially accompanied by showers and thunderstorms. Luso Meteo warns that it is still too early to determine the intensity of precipitation or the most affected regions, also considering that late autumn and winter may bring more favorable conditions for intense rainfall episodes, although this is only a seasonal trend.
