"Cattle farming is now looked at differently": quality gains weight in the business - Gonçalo Souto Patrício

Gonçalo Souto Patricio, breeder and selector of the Limousine breed, returned to participate in EXPOMOR 2026, integrated into the historic Feira da Luz in Montemor-o-Novo. The event is considered by the breeder as the largest livestock fair in Portugal and represents an important opportunity for him to promote animals, finalize business deals, and establish contacts in the sector. Participation results from work that begins long before the event's opening, with animals being worked on throughout the year.

In this year's edition, Gonçalo Souto Patricio presented only one specimen of the Limousine breed, chosen for its valued characteristics in production, namely ease of calving, good weaning weights, and rusticity. These characteristics carry significant weight in producers' options and in the valuation of animals in an increasingly demanding sector.

Regarding the current moment of the livestock business, the breeder considers that the sector is going through a phase of change, especially in how quality is perceived. As he explained to Rádio Campanário, if before price was privileged over quality, this context is now different, with greater attention to the characteristics of animals and the value they can add to the farm.

Beyond the exhibition and promotion component, EXPOMOR also holds a strong commercial and networking dimension among sector agents. Gonçalo Souto Patricio stated that participation translates into tangible returns, with animals being well sold and the establishment of a network of contacts that he considers essential. The Mertolenga breed is featured as Breed of the Year in this 2026 edition.
