Cantanhede among the lands fighting to bring xávega art to UNESCO

Notícias de Coimbra6 September 2026 at 11:19

Cantanhede is among the regions fighting for xávega art to be recognized as UNESCO intangible heritage. This traditional fishing art, practiced along the Portuguese coast, is characterized by the use of nets pulled by animal traction and represents one of the oldest fishing practices in the country.

A British digital content creator has partnered with restaurants from Costa da Caparica to promote the candidacy of this art to UNESCO. The collaboration aims to raise public awareness about the cultural and historical importance of this fishing tradition.

Xávega is an activity that involves entire coastal communities and keeps alive ancestral fishing practices that have been passed down from generation to generation. UNESCO recognition could help preserve this tradition in the face of pressure from urban development and modern industrial fishing techniques.
