The United States envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv this Sunday for the first time to present a peace proposal aimed at ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The visit comes after a three-hour meeting they had on Saturday in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, and Witkoff, a businessman close to Trump, were met at Kyiv's railway station by the Ukrainian negotiating team, which included Chief of Staff Kirilo Budanov, Head of Foreign Intelligence Rustem Umerov, leader of the Servant of the People party David Arakhamiya, and First Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Sergiy Kislitsya.
President Zelensky had admitted the possibility of the envoys traveling directly by plane from Moscow to Kyiv, whose airspace has remained closed since the start of the Russian invasion. However, Zelensky denounced that Russia bombed both Kyiv airports to prevent this option. The envoys' plane landed in Rzeszow, Poland, near the border with Ukraine, and they then continued by train to Kyiv.
Since Trump was re-elected at the beginning of 2025, he has been trying to find a solution to the war that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but without concrete progress. On Friday, Trump announced that the two envoys would travel to Moscow and Kyiv to revive negotiations, which led both countries to announce a ceasefire between Saturday and Monday. However, hostilities continue, with airstrikes from both sides during Saturday night.
On Saturday night, Russian forces attacked Ukraine with 108 drones and S-300 missiles, with the Ukrainian Air Force claiming to have shot down most of them. In contrast, the Russian army stated it neutralized 258 Ukrainian drones. At least three civilians were wounded in Ukraine during airstrikes, while a man was killed and a woman wounded in a Ukrainian drone attack in the Russian region of Belgorod.
