Falling debt leads Fitch to reward Portugal with A+

SAPO Notícias5 September 2026 at 23:15

Financial rating agency Fitch raised Portugal's rating to A+, acknowledging the downward trajectory of Portuguese public debt. This upgrade represents a new level in the country's credit rating in international markets.

The improvement in the rating reflects the efforts of budgetary consolidation and the progressive reduction of Portugal's sovereign debt. Fitch highlighted that the debt reduction has been consistent and is aligned with the targets set by the government.

This achievement comes at a time when Portugal has been recovering the confidence of international investors. The rating upgrade allows the country access to more favorable financing conditions in the debt markets.

The Portuguese government celebrated Fitch's decision as an external recognition of the management of public accounts. This new classification brings Portugal closer to other eurozone countries with higher ratings.
