The robbery of the Treasure of Villena may have destroyed far more than gold pieces. Archaeologists fear they may have forever lost unique objects and scientific answers that were still to be discovered. One of the most special treasure collections in the world has been stolen.
At 5:16 in the morning of August 27, an alarm went off at a sports center in the Spanish city of Villena, drawing the authorities' attention to the location. A few minutes later, another alarm sounded at the Villena Museum (MUVI), about two kilometers away.
When the police arrived at the museum, just a few minutes after the alert, the thieves had already disappeared from the premises. The exact value of the theft and the identity of the suspects have not yet been released by the authorities.
