Birdwatching takes Paulistanos to the parks

oglobo4 September 2026 at 23:37

A White-tailed Hawk, a rare species in the capital that was previously only observed in the interior of São Paulo, was recorded at Parque da Independência in the Ipiranga neighborhood, South Zone of São Paulo. At the Floresta Municipal Fazenda Castanheiras, along the Billings Reservoir, also in the South Zone, a Collared Araçari, equally uncommon in the municipality, was identified for the first time in the area. In 2025, a Cliff Flycatcher, a small and discreet bird, was even found at Praça da República in the city center.

These sightings have drawn participants to the Vem Passarinhar Sampa project, an initiative of the São Paulo city government carried out in partnership with the NGO Save Brasil. Since 2022, the project has promoted free birdwatching tours in municipal parks and green areas. A total of 57 outings have been held, with 2,961 participants and more than 230 species registered.

During the tours, groups are accompanied by biologists and receive binoculars to walk through the areas and observe the birds. The project aims to expand the population's contact with nature and enhance the urban biodiversity of the capital of São Paulo.

Social jetlag: sleeping more on weekends can increase anxiety in teenagers, new study shows

A new meta-analysis published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews found that teenagers between 12 and 18 years old who sleep more on weekends may have higher levels of anxiety. Analyzing data from more than 235,000 young people and eight studies on the topic, researchers identified a link between the so-called "social jetlag" — the discrepancy between the teenager's biological clock and the school routine — and anxiety symptoms such as worry and restlessness. The greater the difference between sleep schedules during the week and on weekends, the more likely young people are to report higher levels of anxiety, reinforcing the importance of sleep as one of the pillars of mental health in adolescence.

Einstein's "happiest thought" passed the first test in the quantum world

An international team of researchers announced the first successful observation of the effect of gravity on a quantum object in free fall, in a study published in Science Advances. This experimental result demonstrates for the first time, more than a century after Einstein's prediction in 1907, the link between gravity and the quantum world — the physicist's so-called "happiest thought." However, the researchers emphasize that this experiment does not unify quantum mechanics with gravity, nor does it prove that gravity is a quantum phenomenon, but it provides experimental support for the idea that both domains are connected.
