President Donald Trump took measures to require country of origin indication on imported beef, in an attempt to calm the outraged cattle ranchers with the White House plan to increase beef imports.
Trump also stated he will create a program to help cattle ranchers process their own meat, an initiative he had already anticipated last week after the sector's negative reaction to his plan to allow the importation of up to 300 thousand tons of foreign ground beef with reduced tariffs.
For months, the government has been trying to reduce beef prices, which remain persistently high ahead of the midterm legislative elections, amid a severe cattle shortage in the United States.
Any measure to expand supply in the short term through imports faces opposition from agricultural sector entities, which state that these imports harm the domestic market by pressuring the prices paid to producers.
