Carneiro accuses Government of profiting from fuel price increases and wants to lower VAT

RTP Notícias4 September 2026 at 22:20

The Secretary-General of PS, José Luís Carneiro, today accused the Government of profiting from the increase in fuel prices. During his statements, Carneiro criticized the way the executive has been reacting to the rise in prices in the energy sector.

Carneiro revealed that he submitted on Thursday, in Parliament, a proposal to reduce VAT on fuels and food. This initiative comes as part of PS's strategy to combat the cost of living that has affected Portuguese families.

The socialist leader has been pressuring the Government to take measures that ease the burden of taxes on essential goods, arguing that citizens should not be penalized by the current economic situation.

Ukraine: Trump confirms envoys will go to Moscow and Kyiv to revive peace negotiations

Donald Trump confirmed that his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are traveling this weekend to Moscow and Kyiv to revive peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. In Moscow, on Saturday, they will meet with Vladimir Putin, followed by a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in the Ukrainian capital, which will be the first meeting between the two negotiators and the Ukrainian leader. Trump said the envoys are carrying a proposal to end the war, while acknowledging that negotiations are difficult due to the deep hatred between Putin and Zelensky. Washington wants both parties to temporarily suspend attacks during the visit, an appeal also made by Zelensky. The trip occurs a year after the meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska, which ended without agreement, and in a context where Ukraine faces ammunition shortages.

The ministerial body considers that this geographical distribution of activities justifies the jurisdiction of the National Court for the case.
