Minister rejects construction of new landfills

Observador4 September 2026 at 22:14

The Minister of Environment rejected the construction of new landfills in Portugal. This position comes within the scope of a broader strategy for waste management in the country.

The established goal is that only 10% of waste will be deposited in landfills by 2035. This commitment represents a significant change in how Portugal manages its solid waste.

The Algarve region faces a particularly urgent situation, as it has two landfills that are almost full. Given this reality, the region may move forward with incineration as an alternative solution.

It was also announced that a study on this issue will be launched on October 15, seeking to evaluate the best options for the future of waste management in Portugal.

Ukraine: Trump confirms envoys will go to Moscow and Kyiv to revive peace negotiations

Donald Trump confirmed that his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are traveling this weekend to Moscow and Kyiv to revive peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. In Moscow, on Saturday, they will meet with Vladimir Putin, followed by a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in the Ukrainian capital, which will be the first meeting between the two negotiators and the Ukrainian leader. Trump said the envoys are carrying a proposal to end the war, while acknowledging that negotiations are difficult due to the deep hatred between Putin and Zelensky. Washington wants both parties to temporarily suspend attacks during the visit, an appeal also made by Zelensky. The trip occurs a year after the meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska, which ended without agreement, and in a context where Ukraine faces ammunition shortages.

The Spanish Prosecutor's Office presented a report to Judge María Tardón supporting that the National Court be competent to investigate the migratory crisis in Ceuta, arguing that a substantial part of the planning, mobilization and coordination was carried out on Moroccan territory, while the material execution and its effects occurred on Spanish territory. The ministerial body considers that this geographical distribution of activities justifies the jurisdiction of the National Court for the case.
