Vila Viçosa Evokes João Lourenço Rebelo, Court Musician of King John IV, with Lecture and Concert

SAPO Notícias4 September 2026 at 20:00

Vila Viçosa hosts, on September 19 and 20, a lecture and a concert dedicated to João Lourenço Rebelo, known as Rebelinho, a composer who lived between 1610 and 1665 and was a court musician of King John IV. The event aims to commemorate the memory of this Portuguese composer in a place that has connections to the House of Braganza.

The initiative results from a partnership between the Foundation of the House of Braganza and the Vila Viçosa Municipal Council. This collaboration allows efforts to be combined to promote the appreciation of Portuguese musical heritage from the monarchy period.

The event program includes educational components that aim to bring the public closer to the history of Portuguese music. Through the combination of a lecture and a concert, the aim is to offer both a theoretical and practical perspective on the work of João Lourenço Rebelo.

João Lourenço Rebelo was a significant composer of 17th century Portugal, having served at the court of King John IV, a king who was himself passionate about music. His musical legacy is little known to the general public, making this initiative an opportunity to promote his work to new listeners.
