The most expensive mansion in Brazil, located in Leblon, in the southern zone of Rio de Janeiro, began to be demolished last Thursday to make way for a luxury condominium. The property is located in one of the most privileged areas of the neighborhood, with views of the sea, the lagoon and the Christ the Redeemer statue.
The mansion's collection includes works by internationally renowned painters, such as Basquiat and Caravaggio, as well as Brazilians like Beatriz Milhazes and Anita Malfatti. In total, the collection has about 1,700 pieces including furniture, artworks and decorative objects.
Of this amount, 600 pieces belonged to Adalgisa Colombo, who was Miss Brasil in 1958 and lived in the house. Some works are being taken to auction, with starting bids reaching R$ 750 thousand, such as the painting "A Vênus morreu de amor," by Beatriz Milhazes, painted in 1960.
The sale of the pieces is being conducted by auctioneer Horácio Ernani Rodrigues de Mello, through a website. The property was located in the Jardim Pernambuco condominium, an upscale area of the city.
