Study explains how breathing can influence our decisions

A German study published in the journal Neuron revealed that slow breathing, with expiration longer than inspiration, can make people more likely to take financial risks. The research used magnetic resonance imaging and cardiac monitors to investigate how controlled breathing affects the brain and decisions.

Researchers from the Free University of Berlin asked 41 healthy adults to participate in the study, of which 24 were... (the article is incomplete).

Scientists discovered that prolonged expiration increases the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for "rest and digest," and with that amplifies the brain's sensitivity to rewards, leading to greater acceptance of risky bets.

Researchers at Stanford University, in the United States, developed a molecule capable of eliminating aggressive B-cell lymphomas in rats in just 11 days. The substance redirects a common protein in this type of lymphoma to activate programmed cell death. When administered twice a day, the treatment was able to completely eliminate the tumor in less than two weeks. Professor Gerald Crabtree, from Pathology and Developmental Biology, explained that the approach aims to fight cancer at its cause, eliminating its driving force and reprogramming it to induce self-destruction mechanisms of cells.

"With adequate treatment, most people with epilepsy can live a normal life"

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease that affects about 10 in every 1,000 inhabitants in Portugal, and can occur at any age, although it is more frequent in the first year of life and after 60-65 years. Diagnosis is clinical, complemented by electroencephalogram and magnetic resonance imaging, and first-line treatment is pharmacological, with about two-thirds of patients becoming seizure-free. In the event of a tonic-clonic seizure, one should remain calm, protect the person by avoiding dangerous objects, and never try to restrain movements or place anything in the mouth. The causes are varied, including brain lesions, genetic and metabolic factors, and remain unknown in up to half of cases. With adequate treatment, most people can live a normal life, although about 44% of Portuguese patients do not have regular medical follow-up.
