There is marine litter, mainly plastic, on Porto Pim beach, on the island of Faial, in the Azores. A study identified thousands of items associated with lobster fishing among these waste materials.
Many of these plastic waste items traveled thousands of kilometers before reaching the Azores archipelago. Their origin was traced to the United States and Canada.
The study analyzed the presence of plastics on Porto Pim beach, revealing the extent of marine pollution affecting the Azorean islands.
