Portugal decides to sell TAP to Lufthansa or Air France before October

Notícias Portugal4 September 2026 at 11:23

Portugal's government is analyzing proposals for the sale of airline TAP, with potential buyers including the Lufthansa Group and Air France-KLM. State-owned Parpública evaluated the binding offers and the Portuguese Executive will soon decide whether to accept one of these proposals or open a final round to receive better offers. Both bidders plan to invest in TAP's expansion, with Lufthansa already beginning construction of facilities in Portugal and Air France-KLM committing to developing new maintenance facilities in the neighboring country.

The partial sale of TAP, which had been relaunched by the government in 2025, is now down to two candidates following the withdrawal of the IAG group. This withdrawal was justified by IAG citing the need for a clear path to achieve full ownership of any acquired company.

Meanwhile, TAP recently announced a significant increase in net losses during the first half of 2026, although it recorded a new record in revenue and passengers. The company's future strategic plan includes growth of long-haul routes, product diversification, expansion of revenue sources and digital transformation through the Horizon Program.
