The Directorate-General for Health (DGS) issued an alert regarding the degradation of air quality in Portugal due to the presence of atmospheric dust. A mass of air originating from the North African deserts is crossing the country, carrying suspended dust particles that will affect environmental conditions over the coming days.
According to DGS, the most impacted regions will be Central and Southern mainland Portugal, where a higher concentration of suspended particles in the atmosphere is expected. This meteorological situation is common at certain times of the year, when Saharan winds transport dust to Europe.
Given this scenario, DGS left recommendations for the population to minimize health effects. These guidelines aim to particularly protect more vulnerable groups, such as children, elderly people, and those with respiratory or cardiovascular diseases.
Health authorities advise the population to monitor the evolution of the situation and follow the preventive measures transmitted by DGS during the period when the dust mass remains over Portuguese territory.
