An Atlantic depression is expected to cause a significant worsening of weather conditions in the Azores from this Friday, with effects expected until Sunday. According to Meteored, the first impacts will begin to be felt at the end of Friday afternoon, when the depression approaches the archipelago from the west/northwest, bringing cold and unstable air at altitude that will favour locally intense showers and possibility of thunderstorms.
The islands of Flores and Corvo, belonging to the Western Group, appear among the most exposed to the effects of the depression. In Flores, wind gusts could reach 55 to 60 km/h, while in Corvo they could approach 50 km/h. Wave height could approach five metres, especially on the westernmost islands. Despite the instability, temperatures should remain high initially, with highs reaching 28 degrees in Corvo, Flores and Horta.
During Friday night and the early hours of Saturday, the instability will advance to the Central Group, affecting Faial and Pico. Throughout Saturday, gusts may vary between 35 and 45 km/h on various islands. The weather models point to the highest precipitation accumulations occurring between Saturday night and the end of Sunday, with values between 50 and 55 millimetres in Flores and Faial, possibly reaching about 60 millimetres on the island of Pico. Sea conditions should reach the most adverse period between the end of Saturday and Sunday morning.
In Madeira, the scenario will be quite different, with generally dry and stable weather throughout the weekend. Only on Sunday is wind strengthening expected in the most exposed areas, with gusts close to 40 km/h, while temperatures should fluctuate between 22 and 26 degrees.
