Sam Baron: "What is wrong with artificial intelligence is the name, because it is not intelligent"

Público3 September 2026 at 21:30

Sam Baron, a French designer who has lived in Lisbon for 25 years, criticized the designation of "artificial intelligence," arguing that what is wrong with the concept is precisely the name, since, in his view, AI does not possess real intelligence.

Baron stated that he is not afraid of artificial intelligence, but expressed concern about two aspects he considers fundamental: the preservation of "Portuguese identity" and the future of creativity. These concerns appear to be related to the impact that technology can have on cultural identity and creative work.

The designer, who is well acquainted with Portuguese reality after more than two decades living in Lisbon, shared his great professional wish: to see Portuguese design more present and used in people's daily lives.

The interview with Sam Baron comes at a time of growing debate about the role of artificial intelligence in society and the creative economy, raising questions about how to preserve authenticity and cultural identity in a context of increasing automation and digitalization.
