Marine fauna conservation requires continuous monitoring, research, and field work. Since 2009, the Biota Institute of Conservation has carried out this work in Alagoas, with initiatives focused on marine fauna protection and monitoring of the state's coastal ecosystems.
Among the organization's areas of action are systematic beach monitoring and tracking of species such as sea turtles, birds, and aquatic mammals. One of the organization's pillars is the BiotaMar Project, initiated in 2016 with a focus on the Costa dos Corais Environmental Protection Area (APA), the largest marine conservation unit in Brazil.
The initiative records strandings, monitors the reproductive period of sea turtles, and promotes citizen science actions through the "Stranded?!" Campaign. With support from the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) and the SOS Pró-Mata Atlântica Foundation, BiotaMar has already recorded nearly 9,000 occurrences of marine animals.
