Army has already cleared 808 kilometres of roads after depression Kristin

SAPO3 September 2026 at 20:28

The Portuguese Army has already cleared 808 kilometres of roads after the passage of depression Kristin through the country. This intervention comes in a context where the military have been working on the ground since April, dedicated to opening and cleaning roads affected by a series of storms.

Firefighting work is not new to the Portuguese Army, which has a tradition in this area. However, this year, the preservation of the country goes beyond putting out flames, now including cleaning and clearing roads damaged by meteorological phenomena.

The military have been on the ground since April, when the interventions began following the series of storms that passed through Portugal. Depression Kristin represents only the most recent episode in a series of climatic events that have required the continuous mobilisation of the armed forces.

The beaches of Codixeira, Lagoa and South Urban Zone II, in Póvoa de Varzim, are again suitable for bathing from September 3, after the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) confirmed, through analyses carried out on August 31, that the water quality in these three bathing areas has returned to the required legal parameters. The temporary advisory, which had been issued due to elevated levels of microbiological parameters, has thus been lifted, restoring normality for swimmers at the final stretch of the bathing season.
