Very strong El Niño may prolong drought and heat in Piauí until 2027; understand

Portal O Dia3 September 2026 at 15:02

The El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to reach a very strong peak at the end of 2026 according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) forecast, may prolong the drought and heat in Piauí until 2027. The climate scenario indicates below-average rainfall and elevated temperatures for the Northeast region.

The WMO warned that the current El Niño is one of the most intense ever recorded, with significant impacts on global weather conditions. The phenomenon tends to alter rainfall and temperature patterns in several regions, including Brazil.

In Piauí and other Northeast states, the combination of El Niño with climate change has already caused severe effects. The reduction in rainfall affects agriculture, water resources, and the vulnerable population of the region.

Experts point out that, without favorable historical precedents, the situation may persist for the coming years. The federal and state governments are monitoring the impacts and evaluating emergency measures to face the prolonged drought.
