The municipality will proceed with the distribution of 20 thousand bracelets capable of detecting the so-called "rape drug", GHB. The objective is to provide a security device that allows users to identify the presence of this substance in drinks.
The bracelets were developed in 2025 by researcher Carlos Lodeiro Espiño, from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the Nova University of Lisbon (NOVA FCT). The project also had the collaboration of the University of Valencia, in Spain.
The Spanish company Celentis also participated in the development of this detection technology. The partnership between academic institutions and the private company allowed for the creation of this personal protection device.
The massive distribution of these bracelets represents a prevention measure against sexual crimes involving GHB, a substance frequently associated with cases of assault.
