Nurses will triage SNS 24 calls at INEM

Nurses will now perform the triage of SNS 24 calls at INEM, replacing pre-hospital emergency technicians in this function. This change is part of a new model that will be implemented "shortly" by the authorities.

The triage system adopted will be the Manchester Triage System, an internationally recognized method that allows calls to be classified according to their urgency and prioritize care.

This measure comes within the scope of a restructuring of INEM's Centro de Orientação de Doentes Urgentes (CODU) (Emergency Patient Guidance Center), which manages SNS 24 calls. The transition aims to improve the quality of clinical triage performed on emergency calls.

Nurses have training and clinical skills that allow them to perform a more detailed assessment of the symptoms presented by patients, ensuring more appropriate guidance of urgent cases.
