Mitsubishi Fuso resumes activity at Tramagal and reaffirms factory as European production hub

Eco3 September 2026 at 16:17

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck Europe resumed activity at its factory in Tramagal, in the district of Santarém, on August 24, after a period of reduced activity that included the suspension of production in July, with 267 workers covered by temporary lay-off arrangements, followed by the usual shutdown for holidays in August. The company, currently employing around 400 workers, reaffirmed that the Tramagal facility remains the central production base for European operations, a situation that was not altered after the integration of Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation into the ARCHION Group.

The factory produces for the European market the diesel Canter models of 6, 7.49, and 8.55 tonnes, with the company confirming that the 3.5-tonne Canter is not currently in production. The fully electric eCanter models are also manufactured in versions of 4.25, 6, 7.49, and 8.55 tonnes. The company did not disclose the proportion of each model in the total production of the facility.

Before the summer shutdown, Mitsubishi Fuso had announced an adjustment to production plans and the human resources structure, including a voluntary redundancy programme. According to union leader Dário Lima, from SITE-CSRA, the information provided to workers indicated production of around 20 trucks per day from September, below the 28 units per day the factory had previously produced, but the company did not confirm this forecast, stating that production volumes are commercially sensitive information.

Regarding prospects for 2027, Mitsubishi Fuso indicated that production plans are regularly adjusted to customer demand and market conditions, without providing specific forecasts. Regarding integration into the ARCHION Group, the company did not anticipate new models, projects, or investments for Tramagal, stating that it continuously evaluates opportunities to strengthen the business and that any future plans will be announced at the appropriate time.

It's now official: EU approves new rules for online shopping and there are new fees coming

EU member states have approved a profound reform of European customs rules that will affect online purchases made on platforms that ship products from outside the European Union. The main changes include new responsibilities for e-commerce platforms, which will now assume customs obligations currently falling on consumers, the creation of a handling fee for small packages from third countries, and changes to the treatment of orders worth up to 150 euros. The reform aims to combat undervaluation of goods, improve control of products entering the European market, and increase accountability of platforms. Implementation will be phased, with some measures still pending final approval by the European Parliament.
