The escalation of wheat prices on international markets and Portugal's strong dependence on imports of this cereal should once again put pressure on bread prices from October onwards. This situation arises in a context of increasing production costs and vulnerability of the Portuguese food chain to global market fluctuations.
In Trás-os-Montes, farmers and researchers have been advocating for several years for the need to strengthen national cereal production as a way to reduce external dependence. This region has been identified as having potential for the development of cereal crops adapted to the territory.
At the same time, projects developed in Bragança seek to recover and promote traditional varieties of wheat and other cereals. These initiatives aim to diversify national production and contribute to greater food autonomy for the country.
The combination of these factors — rising prices on the international market, dependence on imports and efforts to relocalize production — highlights the challenges Portugal faces in the cereal sector and the potential impact on consumer prices.
