What species is this: Mediterranean collared water snake

Reader Maria João Figueiredo photographed a snake on August 31 in Malcata, near her home, and sent the images to Wilder to identify the species. The request was answered by Diogo Parrinha, a herpetologist and doctoral student at BIOPOLIS/CIBIO.

The species identified was the Mediterranean ringed water snake (Natrix astreptophora), and it was a juvenile. This snake is a good swimmer and can exceed 150 centimeters in total length, with females usually being larger than males.

Regarding its appearance, the dorsal coloration is variable, ranging from olive-green, greyish, brownish, or tan, with a pattern of small irregular black spots scattered along the body.

Diogo Parrinha noted that this is a completely harmless species, being neither venomous nor typically aggressive.
