Portugal is 1.5 degrees warmer in the last 50 years, which represents a very significant jump according to Ricardo Ribeiro. This temperature increase is considered an alarming phenomenon in the context of climate change.
Ricardo Ribeiro warned that the combination of hot and dry weather creates conditions particularly conducive to the occurrence of rural fires. The dehydration of vegetation fuels and the presence of dust coming from northern Africa contribute to further aggravating the fire danger across the national territory.
The specialist highlighted that these combined factors considerably increase the risk of continuity and spread of fires in Portugal, especially during the summer periods.
