In Caniço, Madeira, the house and garden where artist Lourdes Castro lived and created her famous shadows has come onto the real estate market, being sold for 4.1 million euros. The property is described as "highly coveted" on the market.
The property attracted interest because it is the living and creative space of one of the most important artists in Portugal. Historians such as Emanuel Gaspar criticise the sale, arguing that the establishment of a house-museum dedicated to the artist should have been considered.
Lourdes Castro's heir justified the decision to sell to RTP, claiming that the State showed no interest in the property, taking no initiatives to preserve it as a cultural space.
The sale raises questions about the preservation of Portuguese artistic heritage, as the space where Lourdes Castro developed her iconic work may no longer be accessible to the public.
