Bishop of Viana do Castelo's name used in email scam attempts

Correio da Manhã3 September 2026 at 13:22

The Diocese of Alto Minho issued an alert about an email scam being sent to priests in the Viana do Castelo district. The fraudulent messages use the name of the Bishop of the Diocese, D. João Lavrador, to deceive the recipients.

The purpose of the emails is clearly fraudulent, seeking to obtain personal information or financial gains from the priests who receive them. The Diocese warned its members to be suspicious of any messages that appear to be sent in the Bishop's name.

D. João Lavrador is the Bishop of the Diocese of Alto Minho, which covers the district of Viana do Castelo. The situation raises concerns about digital security within the religious institution.

The diocesan authorities recommended caution and independent verification of any suspicious communication, in order to prevent priests and other members of the Diocese from becoming victims of this fraudulent scheme.
