A total of 500 Citizen Cards and 200 passports are believed to have been stolen during a robbery at the Civil, Property and Commercial Registry Office of Chaves, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2. Entry to the building was made through forced entry of a door. In addition to the documents, two safes, approximately 500 euros and two white stamps were taken, according to information provided to the authorities.
The PSP of Vila Real confirmed the robbery and is investigating the case. Police went to the registry office during the morning of Wednesday to carry out procedures inside the premises and collect evidence that may help clarify the circumstances of the theft, including how entry to the building was gained and who may be involved.
The presence of these documents among the stolen items places hundreds of identification documents at the center of the investigation. However, available data does not indicate who the cards and passports belonged to or what stage of the issuance process they were in.
