Six Algarve municipalities are today at "maximum" wildfire danger, according to the classification of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA). The affected municipalities are Monchique, Portimão, Silves, Loulé, São Brás de Alportel, and Tavira.
The IPMA also placed six other Algarve municipalities at "very high" danger: Aljezur, Vila do Bispo, Lagos, Alcoutim, Castro Marim, and Vila Real de Santo António. The municipalities of Lagoa, Albufeira, Faro, and Olhão present "high" danger.
The IPMA's classification system for wildfire danger includes five levels, ranging from "reduced" to "maximum". The calculation of these levels is based on four variables: air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and the amount of precipitation recorded in the previous 24 hours.
