Deaf people without direct access to 112 for almost 5 years

The MA112 app, which allowed deaf people to request help through video call to the emergency number 112, stopped working in December 2021. Since that date, the deaf community in Portugal has been without direct and immediate access to emergency services.

The Portuguese Association of the Deaf has been advocating for the creation of an accessible system that allows deaf citizens to communicate directly with emergency services. The association argues that this solution should be funded by the State Budget, thus guaranteeing equal access to emergency services for all people.

This situation affects thousands of deaf people in Portugal who, for almost five years, have not had at their disposal a tool that allows them to request help autonomously and effectively in emergency situations.

Young people in the region, from the desire to leave to the dream of returning

Three young people from the Alcobaça and Nazaré region share their experiences about leaving and staying, proving that today emigrating does not mean forgetting one's roots and staying is not a sign of lack of ambition. Maria Helena Monteiro, 27 years old, grew up torn between the desire to leave and her love for her homeland, choosing to reinvent herself locally through fashion design, photography, and social media management, believing that one does not need to leave to be successful. Francisco Fernandes emigrated to Dubai in 2018 as a cabin crew member for Emirates, accumulating experience and financial stability, but always keeping the dream of returning to Portugal. Pedro Melo works in Norway to save and invest in the future, dreaming of a simple life in Cadoiço, with his own house and vegetable garden. The three testimonies demonstrate that the region remains alive and present in these young people's lives, regardless of the distance.

Maduro asks for case dismissal in US invoking sovereign immunity

Venezuela's president, Nicolás Maduro, asked a US court to dismiss the case against him, arguing that he has sovereign immunity as head of state. The charges include conspiracy to commit acts of narco-terrorism, cocaine importation, and possession of automatic weapons. Maduro's defense argues that, as the sitting president of a state recognized by the US, he is protected by the sovereign immunity doctrine, which prevents foreign leaders from being tried in American courts for acts performed in the exercise of their official duties.
