The European Day of Jewish Culture takes place next Sunday in Porto, with a program that includes cinema, literature, music, gastronomy and historical testimonies. The event is expected to attract around 5,000 visitors throughout the day, repeating the attendance of previous editions.
The Jewish Community of the Algarve may participate with an art display, similar to the one it presented in Cascais, as revealed by Gabriel Senderowicz, president of the Jewish Community of Porto. The responsible expects the event to maintain the success of previous editions.
The program includes the screening of three films at the Jewish Museum, the presentation of the book "At the Table in Sefarad" with tasting of Sephardic gastronomy, and a concert by the Mekor Haim Choir with repertoire in Ladino, Hebrew and Yiddish. There is also the presentation of the book "Jewish Lives," by Carlos Carvalheira, and a lecture by historian César Santos Silva on the contribution of Jewish presence to the identity of Porto.
Visitors may visit the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue, described as the largest on the Iberian Peninsula, the Jewish Museum of Porto, the Holocaust Museum, an art gallery and the Rosh Pinah library, which brings together around 10,000 works. At the Holocaust Museum, it will be possible to hear the testimony of Chaja Lassmann, a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp. The European Day of Jewish Culture has been celebrated in Porto since 2022.
