Many people experience the sensation of eyelid twitching daily, and for some this raises concerns about possible health problems. This twitching is characterized by its sudden onset, occurring at any time and causing significant discomfort and annoyance.
The specialist Rogelio Ribes Escudero, head of cornea transplant at the German Hospital of Buenos Aires, uses an analogy to explain the phenomenon. According to him, just like a car that, when the engine overheats, turns on a red light indicating that it needs to stop, the body works in a similar way. When the eyelid trembles or twitches, the body is signaling that the person needs to slow down.
The professional clarifies that this condition is known in medicine as palpebral myokymia, characterized by small spontaneous spasms or contractions of the eyelid muscles that occur involuntarily. This is a disorder that happens when the muscle around the eyelid, instead of contracting and closing normally, causes the muscle fibers to contract involuntarily and repeatedly.
