Legendary golfer Tiger Woods pleaded guilty on Wednesday (2) to reckless and negligent driving following a car accident in Florida in March. The plea deal allowed the more serious charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs to be dropped, thus avoiding a harsher sentence.
Under the deal, Woods will have his driver's license suspended for five years. Judge Darren Steele issued a warning during the hearing at the Martin County Courthouse in Stuart, Florida: if Woods drove again during that period, he would return to prison immediately.
The accident happened when Woods' vehicle collided with a trailer being pulled by a pickup truck near his home on Jupiter Island, Florida. The authorities who responded to the scene concluded that the player was under the influence of substances and found opioid painkillers at the scene.
Woods is a 15-time Grand Slam winner and one of the greatest legends in world golf. The accident generated great international attention and raised questions about the athlete's condition at the time of the collision.
