Encounters between vessels and orcas are (again) on the rise, couple reports incident off Leixões

SIC Notícias2 September 2026 at 16:24

Encounters between vessels and orcas are increasing again in Portuguese waters, according to reports of recent incidents. A couple reported an incident off Leixões, in the district of Porto, where the vessel was confronted with the presence of the animals.

This week alone, in the North of the country, five encounters between vessels and orcas were recorded. One of the sailboats involved was left without a rudder due to the impact of the encounter with the animals.

The phenomenon is not new in Portuguese waters, but it has been occurring with increasing frequency. Orcas, also known as killer whales, interact with vessels in sometimes aggressive ways, causing structural damage to boats.
